A sea of azalea in Luquan waits for lingering visitors

[InKunming--Kunming] Carpeted with wild azalea blossoms, Malutang of Luquan county in Kunming has enjoyed a good reputation for a long time thanks to the flourishing azalea in the middle of April. Recently, about 267 hectares of azalea in full bloom become a good place to visit for a holiday.

Malutang, with 2,750 meters of average altitude, is located in the northwest of Luquan county, which is 179 kilometers far from Kunming. A cloud of azalea are mainly distributed in two areas, Shanghuofang and Fengmaoling. Depending on the climate and altitude, azalea at the foot of the mountain normally bloom in March, while those in mountain side bloom from April to June.

This year, the best flowering period is from mid April to late May. Two-day spring raining plus with the changing climate of alpine region, Malutang is often misty in clouds and fog. If the time is right, tourists are lucky to have an unforgettable experience of appreciating flowers in mist.

Meanwhile, Malutang has a unique species of azalea only growing in alpine region, with small branches and pink petals. One third of these wild azalea are aged over 100 years. According to incomplete statistics, due to its complex terrain and few outsiders, Malutang is able to maintain the most primitive natural scenery and landscape.

For visitors, the ticket price is 50 yuan for each person, but there is concession for children, the elder and others. Two routes are recommended for self-driving, or you can take buses. It is wise to bring some clothes in case of large difference in temperature between day and night.
