Experts from China and Myanmar discovered new species Dendrobium

[InKunming--Sister Cities] Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-SEABRI) and the Burmese researchers discovered a new species of Dendrobium in Northern Myanmar, and named Dendrobium Naungmungense.

Dendrobium is one of the largest genera of orchidaceae, about 800 to 1500 species, which are mainly distributed in South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia. There are 129 dendrobium already being recorded in Myanmar. Since 2015, scientists form China and Myanmar did a fieldwork in Naungmeng region of Northern Myanmar, and found a kind of dendrobium attaching to the trees in a rainforest. It has branched stems and short inflorescences with 1 to 2 flowers which is kelly. Three labella have amaranth stripes or spots. After looking up the relevant specimens and literature, it is considered as a new species of dendrobium, and is named Dendrobium Naungmungense after its origin.

From 2015 to 2017, there were only 20 strains being found. As the population has grown and human activities has increased, the local ecological environment has been seriously damaged. Additionally, this dendrobium is collected and sold because its high ornamental value and medicinal value. According to the standard of International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Dendrobium Naungmungense is regarded as endangered species.
