New habenaria species found in Wenshan, Yunnan

[InKunming--Yunnan] A new species named as habenaria malipoensisof was found by researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in Malipo county, Zhuang-miao Autonomous Prefecture of Wenshan.

There are more than 600 species of habenaria in the world, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. It normally has bilobed petals which are similar with human being’s kidney in form, therefore, it is also called “double kidney panax”, which contains both high nutritional value and good ornamental value.

When researchers investigated in Malipo county, they discovered an unusual orchid plant that they had never seen before. After further investigation, they found more of these orchids in nearby hillsides and damp valleys. Backing to the botanical garden with pictures, researcher Liu Qiang read a comprehensive literature and herbarium review. Finally identified it was a new species of habenaria, and the concludiong was unanimously approved by the peers.
