Blanket, a costume symbol for Derung people

Derung Blanket, or Yueduo in Derung language, is a must for Derung ethnic group’ clothes in Yunnan.

A blanket is usually one meter in wide and two meters in length. It is wrapped the body aslant, from the right arm to left axilla then to the chest. It is tied on the right arm. Some women wrap two blankets: one for wrapping aslant, the other for wrapping the waist.

It is complicate to make a blanket. The twine, made from plants, are weaved into different patterns with mainly four colors, red, yellow, black and white. A blanket, thick and solid, can be used as a mantle during day time, quilt at night, cusion for a rest and tool for religious rites.

The blankets are sold in Nujiang Lisu Autonoumous prefecture and Gongshan Derung Autonomous County in Yunnan.
