Kunming Botanical Garden wins international award

Nearly 200 delegates of the International Camellia Society (ICS), who are come from 14 countries and regions, visited Thursday the camellia garden of Kunming Botanical Garden in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province.

The 27th International Camellia Congress will be held from February 6 to 9 in central Yunnan Province’s Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture. Representatives and specialists from China, France, Holland, Britain, Italy, and South Korea etc will attend the conference.

Kunming Botanical Garden was awarded the title of “International Camellia Garden of Excellence” and the award ceremony will be held on the 27th International Camellia Congress.

"This is my fifth visit to Kunming Botanical Garden. There are affluent varieties of camellia here and some are unique. Moreover, the garden’s management and maintenance has reached world leading level," said the president of International Camellia Society. She told reporters that 12 camellia gardens from 6 countries would be awarded the title of "International Camellia Garden of Excellence" this year, of which 3 gardens are from China.

Founded April 1962, the ICS is a non-profit organization devoted to the genus Camellia. Its yearly publication is the International Camellia Journal. And as the official registrar for the genus Camellia, it maintains the International Camellia Register. An international congress is held biennially, and regional meetings are regularly arranged by the membership representatives. The ICS has more than 2,000 members worldwide.
