Wind chills as cold as minus-12 degrees are forecast in Denver overnight, and southern Colorado could see wind chills as cold as minus-24, the National Weather Service warned.

Mountain temperatures could feel as cold as 34 below zero because of the Canadian air mass that lingers over the state, forecasters said.

Authorities encouraged people to take extra precautions and urged homeless people to seek shelter.

Denver Animal Care and Control reminded city residents that harsh cold can have dire consequences for pets left outside, and net the owner a $1,000 fine for cruelty or neglect.

"Denver city ordinance requires that pets have adequate outdoor shelter such as a dog house, porch area, or a similar structure that allows an animal to escape the elements," the city stated.

The high temperature in Denver Monday was just 9 degrees, 35 degrees colder than normal, according to weather records.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing Tuesday, with a forecast high of 29 degrees in the metro area. But a southwest wind could push the wind chill to minus-8.

Wednesday will be warmer, with a high in the city of about 40 degrees.

A slight chance of snow is back in the forecast on Thursday night. The high in Denver on Thursday should be about 30 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures return to the seasonable low- to mid-40s this weekend. (Source: The Denver Post)
