Yunnan’s performing culture and arts are moving toward to Southeast Asia and South Asia countries. Two ‘made-in-Yunnan’ musicals, “Smile of Angkor” and “Singapura Lion City”, have been respectively staged in Cambodia and Singapore.

An authentic taste of Cambodia

In November 27 last year, the large-scale performing art “Smile of Angkor” had been staged as first show in Angkor, the well -known Cambodia tourist city. Choreographed by Yunnan Cultural Industry Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd., the show had got an investment of more than 20 million yuan and is expected to achieve 100 million U.S. dollars of revenue each year.

“The clustered Angkor monuments totally shocked me when I walked into there the first time in May, 2010. Since then, I was determined to show Angkor culture on the stage,” said Tao Chun (陶春), director of two art projects. He also was the former director and choreographer of the Beijing Olympic Closing Ceremony.

After November 2010, about 50 percent of performers had been replaced to local performers. After nearly one year, 97 percent of performers are all from Cambodian, only three are Chinese acrobats.

Tao said that Angkor Wat, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is the world's historical and cultural heritage. Unfortunately, there are no written records that remain from the Age of Angkor to tell its whole story in Cambodia. Only Zhou Daguang, a Chinese of the Ming Dynasty, had left behind written records with hundreds of words.

They had done a lot of pertinent research work and visited historians of Cambodian. Finally, they inspired by the statues of Angkor that preserve a remarkably complete record of Angkor Wat history and almost every one of them has an interesting story.
