The 2010 China Kunming Pan-Asia International Zheng He Cultural Tourism Festival has kicked off at Jinning County, Kunming yesterday (July 11). With the theme of "drawing near to Zheng He and co-building a harmonious society", various activities will be held to celebrate the 606 anniversary of Zheng He's voyage.

Zheng He(郑和), a Hui Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat and fleet admiral who commanded voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Africa, collectively referred to as the travels of "Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean" (三保太监下西洋) or "Zheng He to the Western Ocean" from 1405 to 1433.

Chairman of CPPCC Kunming Municipal Committee Tian Yunxiang(田云翔), member of Standing Committee of the Kunming Minicipal Party Committee and executive vice mayor of Kunming Li Wenrong(李文荣) and other officials of Kunming have attended the opening ceremony.

Ambassadors to China, consuls and counselors from 23 countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, Madagascar and United Kingdom have also been invited to attend the ceremony and participate in the opening performances. Besides, the foreign envoys and their wives have also learned to dance the local Yangge (or "Rice Sprout Song," is a form of Chinese folk dance originating from the Song Dynasty. It is very popular in northern China and one of the most representative forms of folk arts).
