The record drought conditions in Kunming have led to widespread economic losses and water shortages. So far the drought has left 32 small reservoirs and 54 dam ponds dried up, as well as most of crops without outputs in Kunming. On the basis of incomplete statistics, more than 1.8 million people have been affected by the drought; of them the food insecure population has reached 517.6 thousand, meanwhile 695.6 thousand people and 427 thousand large livestock lack drinking water. Besides, the crop area that was affected by the drought has reached 125 thousand hectares, which has brought a direct agricultural economic loss of 525 million yuan. A total of 26.75m relief fund has been provided by central, provincial, and municipal governments so far.
A contribution was officially started from February 23 to raise money for drought-stricken groups or areas.
