[InKunming--Kunming] A decade ago, Wen Shurong, the academic secretary of Yunnan Artists Association began his journey of collecting Yunnan’s out-of-print woodcuts. Those works range from 1950s to the present.

"It is impossible to collect Yunnan's top painters' paintings with tens of millions of yuan. However, it was likely to collect all the classic out-of-print woodcuts of one artist’s creating career with at most 300,000 yuan. As a result, I chose the later." Wen Shurong said.

Since 2004, over 500 works have been collected, depicting almost every historical stage. “I collected 90% of the classics of Yunnan out-of-print woodcuts in the past 70 years,” he added.

From 1980s to the the early 2000s, Yunnan's out-of-print woodcut has became one of the four major genres in the history of Chinese printmaking.

In Wen Shurong's collection, there are many gold medal-winning works  in the National Art Exhibition. Every collection is precious not because of the price but "love from the heart".

Since Zheng Xu (a young printmaker in 1980s) won the gold medal of the National Art Exhibition in 1984, Yunnan printmakers have won the gold and silver medals in both the National Art Exhibition and the National Print Exhibition, highlighting the status of Yunnan out-of-print woodcut.
