Ethiopians set a record for 2018 SCO Kunming Intl Marathon

[InKunming--KunmingAt 9 am on December 2, the SCO Kunming International Marathon 2018·Yunnan Salt Industry kicked off at Yunnan Haigeng Convention Center. Belay Olkeba Jene from Ethiopia won and set a course record with a time of 2:20:49.

Evans Nyakamba Mayaka, the champion of men’s half marathon. His face is full of confidence and the joy of victory.

This year’s event was the third since the first one was held in 2016. Four routes were set, including full marathon, half marathon, public health running, and SCO family running. The number of participants increased from 16,000 in the previous to 20,000 this year, coming from 51 countries and regions. The oldest participant is 81 years old and the youngest is just two months old.

At 9 am, participants in four colours of different groups set off from Yunnan Haigeng Convention Center. They ran along beautiful Dianchi lake, and also admired cute black-headed gulls and western mountain in the shape of a sleeping beauty. 

Evans Nyakamba Mayaka from Kenya won the men’s half marathon, and his compatriot Wilson Cheruiyot and Kateregga John from Uganda followed in the second and third place. Bayartsogt Munkhzaya from Mongolia, Zhang Deshun from China and Mercy Wanjiru Njoroge from Kenya won the women’s half marathon.

Ethiopia’s Belay Olkeba Jene crossed the finish line of men’s marathon with the record of 2:20:49 which was the best in three years. Chalabekele Begna and Tela Hagos Gebremeskel who were also ethiopians won the second and third places in men’s marathon.

The top three of women’s marathon were Getiso Tsehaygebre from Ethiopia, Rodah Jepkorir Tanui from Kenya and Maslova Daria from Kyrghyzstan.

In the SCO family running, there were both old couples and young couples. They ran with families and showed a nice mood.

The participant crossed the finish line with smile in men’s half marathon. Volunteer behind him smiled heartily under his bright smile. That perseverance and never giving up is the spirit of the marathon.

A man finished men’s full marathon. His applause encouraged both himself and others.

Three tutors from Kunming University of Science and Technology and Kunming Metallurgy College took part in the marathon. This is their third time to participate. After the race, they said excitedly, “we will insist on participating in every SCO marathon no matter winning or losing.”

Girls in the marathon were undoubtedly the most beautiful scenery.
