After Liu Xiu, Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty succeeded to the throne, he sent General Feng Yi to go west to close in on the Chimei peasant insurrectionary army. Feng’s troops were defeated in Huixi by the peasant army. When Feng Yi returned to his camp, he summoned his stragglers to sneak into the peasant army. By attacking from both the inside and the outside, they were finally able to annihilate the peasant army. When they returned, Emperor Guangwu rewarded Feng Yi and told him, “What we lose in hake we shall have in herring.” The meaning was that although Feng Yi suffered a setback in Huixi at the beginning, he finally won a victory in Shengchi. So he should be rewarded and praised.
